Kosgoda – Turtle Conservation

The Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Centre is one of Sri Lanka’s most established sea turtle protection programmes – five of the world’s eight sea turtle species nest on this stretch of coast. A morning visit adds genuine conservation depth to the beach ending of several itineraries and is specifically compelling for families with children.
Wilpattu – Villu Lake Landscape

Wilpattu is defined by its villu lakes – natural circular water holes in the dry forest that attract wildlife throughout the day. Far fewer visitors than Yala, a completely different atmosphere: quiet, ancient, forested. The quality of photographic solitude here is its defining quality for serious wildlife photographers.
Trincomalee and Nilaveli

Trincomalee has one of Asia’s finest natural harbours and Pigeon Island National Park just offshore. The Koneswaram Temple is dramatically positioned above the ocean cliff. From May to September, the east coast here is in completely different condition to the south coast – which makes it the natural summer-season alternative for the conscious travel and cycling positioning segments.
Haputale – Quieter Tea Country

Haputale sits in the southern tea highlands at a lower elevation than Nuwara Eliya – quieter, less commercialised and with Lipton’s Seat as its defining morning reward: a panoramic viewpoint above multiple estate valleys that Thomas Lipton himself used to survey his empire. The landscape is extraordinary and the tourist infrastructure light.
Kitulgala – Rainforest River Valley

The Kelani Ganga at Kitulgala runs Grade 3 to 4 rapids through a gorge where the rainforest walls come down to the water on both sides. The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed here in 1957. Exceptional endemic birding in the rainforest above. A unique combination of adventure and biodiversity found nowhere else on the island this accessibly.
