This is Udawalawe at its most photogenic: an afternoon drive timed to finish at the reservoir edge, when the light turns gold and the herds come down to drink. Before the drive, the Elephant Transit Home’s afternoon feed. Opened in 1995, the centre takes in calves orphaned or abandoned in the wild and raises them with deliberately minimal human contact – no petting, no chains, no performances – so they never learn to depend on people. From the viewing platform you watch each calf gulp milk through a funnel, then hear the best part of the story: released females have since been seen in wild herds raising calves of their own.
